The Africa solar installed capacity crossed a mark of 7 GW in first quarter of year 2023.As of May’2023 the total solar installation across Africa around 7.4 GW & is anticipated to reach a capacity of approx. 75 GW* by 2030 Africa countries are growing in solar capacities & will continue to hold a strong influence in the capacity additions as well. Egypt commands approximately 22% of the total upcoming Africa solar installations, with an projected capacity above 17 GW. Morocco has also shown a significant growth in its solar installations. The upcoming solar capacity of Morocco will help the African region fulfill its renewable energy as well as solar energy targets by 2030. The active participation of Morocco in solar energy adoption and installation showcases their commitment to renewable energy growth and sustainability in the region.
Amidst the upward trajectory of solar energy capacity, several countries are emerging as frontrunners, demonstrating commendable efforts in expanding their contributions to the overall capacity growth by 2030. The capacity expansions of few markets can be seen below:
- Egypt is set to have a significant number of upcoming solar plants (nearly 25), with a combined capacity of above 17 GW
- Morocco is expected to have about 20+ upcoming solar plants, with a total capacity of more than 13 GW
- Tunisia is anticipated to have 25+ upcoming solar plants with a total capacity of more than 10 GW
- Zimbabwe is expected to have 30+ upcoming solar plants with a total capacity of approx. 2 GW
